On Friday 2nd September we had our pre-departure briefing meeting at the Royal Airforce Club in London.
We met our two team mates for the first time, Anna (another Anna, very confusing!!) and Matt. Anna has recently graduated with a degree in Pharmacology from Newcastle. Matt has a degree in Theology and has been working/travelling since. They both seemed like great guys and we're both looking forward to getting to know them better over the next three months.
The team met with Shirley Bickler who introduced her remedial reading programme which was a very useful session. It gave us a great insight into the modern approach to teaching literacy skills. Shirley hopes to meet us in Cameroon in order to gain a better understanding of the situation there.
We then had the official pre-departure briefing with David Dennison, David Ndzi (Who lectures at Portsmouth University and originally comes from Buea, Cameroon) and John M.Mbame who is from the Cameroon embassy in the UK. It was great to meet people from the country we will be calling home for the next few months and it was a real insight into the Cameroonian way of life.
We now feel a little more prepared for what lies ahead and we look forward to it with excitement.
Hopefully our next message will come from Cameroon, although when, we are not entirely sure. Apparently our first three days are forecast thunderstorms but since it’s the end of the wet season this is not entirely unexpected.
