On Wednesday afternoon Anna held a teacher training workshop for the staff at Jamadianle. She demonstrated some different teaching styles and focused on improving literacy. The workshop seemed to have a positive impact and by today some teachers were already trying different techniques. Hopefully this will continue and Anna is spending time in lessons helping them as necessary when trying these new ideas.

The aprons and equipment purchased for water play were trialed today by two teachers (pre-nursery and nursery). The children loved it and were amazingly well behaved which was great because the staff won’t be put off from doing it again. We were really surprised because normally they are so rough with each other and there was potential for disaster! However, the teachers were really pleased with how well the activity worked and already have ideas about what they want to do next time! :+)  The pre-nursery teacher also let the children (aged 2-3yrs) play with bricks and now wants to try a painting activity which we will be doing on Monday. It was really good to see the children playing with each other! She also helped the nursery learn “What’s the time Mr Wolf!” to give teachers another idea of how to teach numbers.

At the teacher training workshop she also suggested introducing time at the beginning of each day when the teachers focus on teaching reading and developing word skills in the children. Reading levels are very poor and the staff are aware that they need to make some changes if the levels are to improve. She will be focusing on this the last few weeks we are here and the teachers are currently very keen to implement this.

Tom has been working in the computer room and new internet room. The wiring is almost complete in the new internet room and the tables, which are being made by UAC’s woodshop, are taking shape. Unfortunately the computers from America won’t be reaching UAC before we leave, which is a great disappointment but was irresolvable. Tom hopes to set up the room as much as possible to make installation for UAC as simple as possible.

Tom has also been working in the current computer room, trying to make computers run more efficiently, reinstalling and wiping harddrives left right and centre. The computer room has become very busy with an influx of student, which is promising for the computer room’s future.

Thanks for the update - sounds great. Shame about the computer arrivals (ah, Africa!), but the teaching stuff looks fab. And the kids are far too cute! GB

Hi Tom and Anna,
I got the address of your site from Mr Orock. I am a past volunteer from the Netherlands.
It's good to read that everything is developing a lot! I think the teacher training day was a great success. Go on and enjoy your stay.
