After working hard for some weeks we decided on the weekend of 22/23rd October to treat ourselves to a trip to Kribi, a coastal town in the South Province. Matt, Anna and I took off on Friday to Kribi taking a combination of three taxies and three buses’. The journey was relatively difficult, particularly navigating Douala, the industrial capital of Cameroon, but I think it could have been worse. The buses were less than comfortable with the general rule of two people to each seat being strictly followed. The entire journey took around seven hours and we eventually arrived in Kribi.

The hotel we had booked was nice, the room cost around £26 a night which we shared between three of us. The hotel was on the beach and was a superb place for watching the beautiful sunsets over the sea. We rested for the first evening and had dinner before our big adventure the next day...

The next day we had decided to take a boat trip up a river from Kribi to visit Pigmy villages in the forest. The boat trip turned out to be the highlight of the weekend, the peaceful trip up river was marvelous and we'd be assured there were no hippos or crocodiles!!

Once we had arrived out guide Jack took us for a short distance into the forest before letting out some short cry, which was immediately responded to be the apparent other live forms beyond our vision. Anna looked rather nervous at the point wondering quite what we had let ourselves in for. But all turned out well, the pigmies we welcoming and let us walk around their small village which was made from traditional materials. The people themselves were not immediately obvious as pigmies but once you stood next to one, they were noticeable smaller. (see group picture). There were not many older male pigmies around, apparently they were out on a hunt, but the eldest pigmy showed us to the nearby palm oil plantation which was vast. Once we had finished at the village we had another boat trip back down river and walked to a nearby waterfall.

The waterfall is one of only a few in the world which pours directly into the a although the weather was not spectacular was a wonderful sight.

We enquired as to the cost of prawns which were caught locally and we promptly brought a overly priced platter of prawns which despite the price were really nice. Again, I have never liked seafood of any kind, so liking the prawns was a nice surprise, although I am sure it is something to do with either the freshness or the sauce which they were cooked in. So don't make prawn cocktails for our return Mum!! We then returned to the hotel via the local "Western" bakery to buy bread and cheese after our expensive lunch.

After such a long journey we decided that to stay for one day would be a shame and that after the previous days activities we were quite tired, so we decided to stay an extra night and return on Monday morning. We spend Sunday relaxing at the hotel and playing scrabble.
